How do you pronounce this word?
“Dower” or “Door”
I have always heard it said “dower,” and have pronounced it that way myself. But a wise and learned woman just pronounced it “door” this week. She also had pronounced it dour but had recently been corrected.
So, please leave a comment with the phonetic spelling of your pronunciation: dower or door. Thank you.

Dower. Is this an east coast too close to England thing?

Dour rhymes with doer. Oxford English phonetics tells me so.

Although when I looked it up just now both are fine. Comes from Latin durus meaning hard, through Scottish Gaelic dur, to Middle English dour.

This makes the most sense for why it would rhyme with doer.

Being from Kansas I grew up reading the word as dower, roof as ruuff, roots as ruts and creek as crick. Now I believe that dour rhymes not with sour, but sewer.
